Making & Taking a Marshmallow Root Glycerite
Marshmallow Root Glycerite
Althaea officinalis radix.
A soothing demulcent for dry, irritated tissues
Marshmallow root is one of those classic, humble herbs that earns its keep again and again. Rich in mucilage, it shines wherever the body needs moistening, buffering, and soothing—from irritated guts to scratchy throats and inflamed urinary tissue. A glycerite is an especially lovely preparation for this plant: sweet, alcohol-free, alcohol free tincture, and excellent at extracting and preserving its polysaccharides.

Why a Glycerite?
Marshmallow root’s medicine lives largely in its mucilage, which is best extracted with cool methods and preserved in glycerine rather than alcohol. Glycerine:
- Pulls polysaccharides beautifully
- Tastes pleasant (great for kids and sensitive people)
- Preserves well when used at the right concentration
Formulation Overview (1 Litre Jar)
This recipe is designed for a 1 L (1000 ml) glycerite, using dried marshmallow root, prepared so that the herb and menstruum together completely fill the jar.
Marshmallow root is rich in mucilage, making it especially well-suited to a glycerite extraction when the ratios and jar fill are done correctly.
Herb-to-Liquid Ratio
1 : 5 (weight : volume)
- 1 part dried marshmallow root (by weight)
- 5 parts total liquid (by volume)
To make 1000 ml of total liquid, we use:
- 200 g dried marshmallow root
- 1000 ml total menstruum
Glycerine-to-Water Ratio
60% glycerine : 40% water
This ratio provides good preservation while remaining gentle enough to extract marshmallow’s mucilage effectively.
Measurements for a 1 L Jar
Ingredients
- 200 g dried marshmallow root, cut and sifted
- 600 ml vegetable glycerine
- 400 ml spring water
(600 ml glycerine + 400 ml water = 1000 ml total liquid)
When combined with the herb, this amount will fully fill a 1 L jar, leaving little to no head space.
Expected Yield After Pressing
Although we begin with 1000 ml of liquid, the finished amount after pressing will be less.
Dried roots—especially mucilaginous ones like marshmallow—absorb and retain a significant amount of liquid. A practical, real-world estimate is that 25–30% of the menstruum remains trapped in the marc.
Expected finished yield:
➡ 700–750 ml of glycerite
Why Filling the Jar to the Top Matters
Filling the jar completely is more than a visual preference—it directly affects extraction quality and shelf life.
- Minimizes oxidation: Less air means less degradation of sensitive plant compounds.
- Prevents spoilage: Reduced headspace lowers the risk of mold and microbial growth.
- Maintains proper ratios: A fully packed jar ensures the herb remains fully submerged throughout maceration.
- Improves extraction efficiency: Consistent contact between herb and liquid leads to a more complete pull of constituents.
In short, a full jar creates a more stable, potent, and reliable glycerite.
Method: Cold Glycerite Extraction
- Prepare the Menstruum
In a separate container, mix the glycerine and distilled water thoroughly. - Combine Herb & Liquid
Place the dried marshmallow root into a clean 2 L glass jar. Pour the glycerine-water mixture over the herb, making sure it’s fully submerged. Stir well to release air bubbles. - Cap & Label
Label with the plant name, ratio, menstruum, and date. - Macerate (Cold & Slow)
Let sit for 4–6 weeks, away from heat and direct sunlight.
Stir or gently shake every few days—marshmallow root tends to thicken as it extracts. - Press & Bottle
Strain through cloth and press thoroughly (expect a thick, slippery yield). Bottle in amber glass.
Dosage & Use
General Adult Dose
- 2.5–5 ml, up to 3 times daily
Acute Irritation (throat, gut, urinary)
- Smaller, more frequent doses work well:
1–2 ml every 2–3 hours
Children
- 0.5–2 ml, 1–3 times daily, depending on age and size
✨ Tip: For throat or digestive irritation, hold the glycerite in the mouth briefly before swallowing.
Safety & Notes
- Very safe and gentle; suitable for long-term use
- Because it coats tissues, take at least 1 hour away from medications to avoid interference with absorption
- Shelf life: 1–2 years if stored cool and clean
✨ Marshmallow root glycerite is the herbal equivalent of a soft blanket—quiet, reliable, and deeply comforting. It may not be flashy, but it’s foundational medicine, and once you make it, you’ll reach for it far more often than you expect.
